Why TV Sucks

Come on in, I made this great baked pasta dish that is fucking brilliant!  Everyone enjoyed.  There's like ... five of us in the house right now, three adults and two teenagers and everyone enjoyed.  So you get some too!

So I spent most of today ranting about bad TV.  Bad writing, bad premises (premisi?) and just stupid fucking stereotypes.  Seriously, this one chick basically went on a rant about how it's no big deal she had doubts about marrying this guy and went to ask her ex if he still loved her because she's the one who always messes up and he knew that, so it's alright and he's the asshole for hooking up with his ex when she dumped his ass brutally a few months back.  WTF?!  Really?  Fuck you, you stupid cunt.

But most TV, and most movies, are this stupid.  I can't stand them.  And when there is an intelligent show it either doesn't get pushed enough or confuses people and no one watches except the intelligent folks and they get canceled and then I only get to watch reruns or on netflix and watch them over and over and over again because they make me happy and laugh.  Like Better Off Ted.  Watch that shit.  Or else.

On a completely unrelated topic, I love leeks.  I like cooking with'um, I like eatin'um, and I love the name cuz it's what I do with my penis.  Although I don't think about that while I'm cooking with them.  That would be kinda gross.  That's part of why the baked pasta was so good.  Enjoy!!

But seriously, TV, why does it have to suck so bad?  And then someone said something that made me go 'Well now we're fucked.'  Someone said 'I watch TV not to think.'  Damnit, why?!  Thinking is important!  It's part of the fun of the human brain.  We think some random fucked up thoughts that are rather entertaining, like putting a baby in a fish tank and taking a picture and then posting it on effbook so I can be disturbed and amused.  (On a side note, are thalidomide babies in SCUBA gear jokes in poor taste?) So people, stop watching TV to not think.  For fucks sake people:  THINK!!!

So to summarize:
1)  TV and movies suck because people want mindless entertainment and this is wrong
2)  Thinking is good
3)  Coyote will make bad jokes about everything!
4)  I'm an awesome cook.

Oh and my girlfriend is awesome too.  But that's an entirely different thing.

I agree with your premise if you're talking *network* tv.
If people want shallow and mindless, shows like Madmen, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Rome, Deadwood, etc etc. wouldn't be as successful as they are / were.
Just like any media, if you don't like what you're seeing, stop watching. There's lots of *good* stuff out there.

Didn't enjoy Madmen, and Rome was porn with an only slightly better plot. Deadwood was cool, same with Sons of Anarchy.

There are some good shows out there, some even on network TV (Big Bang Theory comes to mind) but the majority of them suck. Same with movies. And it's the thinking thing.

I liked Rome.

I think you're confusing "Rome" with "Spartacus". "Spartacus" was all porn, lame dialogue, simplistic plot.
I really enjoyed Rome 'cuz it's the opposite of Spartacus.

That being said, I don't watch much network TV myself.
Currently going through "24", and desperately wanting season 4 of "Breaking Bad". Soooo...awesome...

Netflix. All the breaking bad is there.

And maybe I am confusing the two.

I liked Carnivale. That one rocked. Never got to finish watching it tho.

I think you are directing your anger at the wrong people.

Can you blame a blind person for reaching out and grasping a warm hand? Can you blame them for letting that hand lead them while the hand promises safety and security?

Can you blame a mislead person for doing a job that everyone around them thinks is established? The people who "make" tv shows - each individual camera man, the coffee kid, even the script writer - they have all been tricked into thinking that what they are doing is a worth while way to earn money.

I will agree with you that the content of most television shows is shit. But you can't judge television if you aren't going to judge bad music, magazines, books, etc. The lessons people "learn" (or I will say 'pick up')from tv are the same lessons people pick up from any bad role model.

I think when you wrote this your frustration was one step further then tv.

What tells people that the lessons picked up from a movie are worth while? Who tells people which celebrity or singer to model?

Media advertisers.

People have been tricked into thinking that they are making educated decisions about life because they are being told what to spend their time thinking and talking about.

Products. Medications. Consuming.

After having the Disney princesses forced into my mind for my entire childhood, I have a lot of trouble recognizing true beauty . I like to think that because I am aware of this, I am immune to being tricked in that way - yet I find myself wearing make up, buying beauty products, tanning, and doing my hair every day.

Why? Why is it so hard for me to accept what I am without a mask? I think it is because I have been told too many times that I need that mask to be considered worthy.

But was it the Disney princesses who did that? Was it Walter Disney? Was it any of the animators in the movies?

I think It was the person who decided how to sell the image of Disney Princesses. Inclusion by exclusion.

I will agree with you that mindless television consumption is a scary concept - especially if you consider just how much tv is being watched. But what if the idea that consuming tv that way - the "kick back and relax" and the "give your brain a break" mentalities - are sold to us in the same way that the princesses are?

These things are SPECIALLY DESIGNED to attract our attention, get into our brains, and plant an impression. What is the impression? Does it matter? Does it matter which show or news program it comes from?

Anyway, this blog entry is from close to a year ago so maybe I shouldn't have commented, but please think about what I said.

Well FPC I'm not sure what your point was. At best, I'm going to guess that you think I should aim my 'anger' at the mass media marketing machine. And well. It kinda is. I say they're badly made. But my real argument is that people, individuals, need to think, need to analyze. You use anecdotal evidence about yourself that even though you understand the pressure of mass media you still buy into it. Well. I can't help you with that. I can point it out, as you have, but you have to want to change it. And to compare the mass media to a disability? That's just WAY over the top. Don't get me wrong, the media is a huge reason people don't think, but the number one way to change that? Choose to think and analyze and question constantly. Otherwise it is willful ignorance and ... well that's your problem, no one elses.

BTW, reading my comment makes it sound like I'm attacking FPC, which I'm not. I just sound particularly harsh in text, apparently...

Silent Winged Coyote,

Touché.

I read your blog entry and the comments made about it, and then went and did something else for a bit. This allowed me time to have multiple conversations with myself and led me to build up a comment about what I perceived as the message behind your blog. Then I wrote it out and posted without re-reading your blog.

I will admit my tail is between my legs.

What I was trying to do was make a comparison of the state of peoples brains (with regard to television consumption) to something that could impair someones judgement. A blind person reaching out and finding a misleading hand was the first thing I came up with, but perhaps you are right, it may be a bit too far. I apologize for offending you.

I can't think of another comparison for this stage of tv addiction. Basically, what I am getting at is I believe some people actually are unable to think for themselves in certain situations because the idea to not think for themselves has been sold to them already.

I would say I am in a different stage then that one. I have already begun to challenge things, and yet I find myself going along with the crowd anyway. Perhaps a better comparison of this could be an alcoholic. The message I am trying to convey is that when a consumer whore is in a situation where they need to decide to challenge what they are being told, it could be viewed as a similar situation to when a person who needs to decide to have a drink or not to have a drink is standing at a bar.

Yes, I just called myself a consumer whore. Because I know it is true, even if I don't like it. I am not asking for your help with it, I am simply using myself as an example.

Did I do a better job of conveying my message? Or is it still so over the place that you can't understand my point?
